This morning, we saw the cheapest foldable smartphone on the market, and now we have come across the Huawei Pocket 2, the first foldable with a quad rear camera. This device folds vertically, inheriting the classic “clamshell” design of traditional phones, and places a strong emphasis on its photographic capabilities.
Like other phones of this type, it has a small circular screen next to the camera, which serves to display notifications, answer calls, and, of course, to act as a viewfinder for high-quality selfies with the main camera. As for hardware, it uses the company’s own SoC, so don’t expect Qualcomm or MediaTek solutions.
Huawei Pocket 2 Specifications
The Huawei Pocket 2 features a 6.94-inch LPTO OLED foldable display with a Full HD+ resolution of 2,690 x 1,136 pixels and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The secondary screen is also OLED, with a circular design and a 1.15-inch size, offering a resolution of 340 x 340 pixels.
In terms of hardware, there are no surprises. It employs the same HiSilicon Kirin 9000S SoC found in other devices like the Mate 60 Pro. This is paired with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and three storage options: 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB. Additionally, there’s a premium version called the Huawei Pocket 2 Art with a more elegant design, featuring 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of internal storage.
Inside the device is a 4,520 mAh battery, making it the longest-lasting foldable. It supports 66W wired fast charging and 40W wireless fast charging. Cooling is handled through a vapor chamber along with multiple layers of graphene to improve thermal conductivity, resulting in a foldable, lightweight, and cool-running device.
Camera, other features, and launch price
The main strength of the Huawei Pocket 2 is its camera setup in a foldable device. It offers a 50-megapixel primary sensor, accompanied by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 2-megapixel UV sensor. According to Huawei, the hyperspectral camera can detect UV ray intensity, suggesting when to apply sun protection to your face and even detecting deep sunspots.
Furthermore, the device has an IPX8-rated chassis, making it water-resistant and even submersible. Its dimensions are 170 x 75.5 x 7.25 mm when unfolded, and 87.8 x 75.5 x 15.3 mm folded. In terms of software, there are no surprises, as it comes with HarmonyOS 4, all with software designed for a foldable device and to add more functionality to the external screen.
Finally, its price. The Huawei Pocket 2 launches in China with a starting price of 7,499 CNY (equivalent to €960 or $1,040), on par with its Samsung counterpart. It is available in grey, white, purple, or black. The Huawei Pocket 2 Art comes in a color called “Dream Blue” and is priced at the equivalent of €1,410 (16GB/1TB).
