You probably heard of the Ice Bucket Challenge, a social media phenomena to spread awareness and raise money for a neurodegenerative disease called ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”). Countless of videos have been uploaded on Instagram, Vine, Facebook, etc. of people getting an ice cold water spilled over them. And in the thick of it all, Samsung has somehow taken this good-hearted social action and twisted it for its benefit. Yes, the ploy may have seen clever but is it underhanded?
In a video that went public last week, Samsung Galaxy S5 is taking the ice bucket challenge and then challenging the iPhone 5S, HTC One M8, and Nokia Lumia 930 to do the same. The phones the S5 called out to take the ice-bucket challenge is of course mobile devices that are not water-resistant. But the Galaxy S5 failed to mention its water-borne rival, Sony Z Series smartphones.
Below is the video. Be the judge on whether Samsung marketing ploy is innocuous…but at least they are directing others to donate…
