We can categorize PC users into two groups: enthusiasts who always want the best components and upgrade when something more powerful comes out, and those who simply replace parts after many years when previous ones become outdated. In the first group, we might find many who overclock their PCs to get the maximum performance. Intel’s upcoming i9-14900KS will be ideal for them, as it has now been announced that there will be official support for delidding this CPU.
Intel and AMD have been rivals for decades, and although the blue team has been beating its competitor for a long time, tables seem to be turning now. This is evident, at least when AMD launched their Ryzen 5000X3D and Ryzen 7000X3D, both of which could match or even surpass the best of Intel in gaming, particularly with the latest generation featuring 3D V-Cache. Being surpassed in gaming has been a severe blow for Intel, and even though they released slightly faster Core 14, it was still not enough.
The i9-14900KS will go on sale in two months
Gaming performance mainly relies on IPC (Instructions Per Cycle) and per-core performance, rather than the number of cores. Most games will run perfectly with 6 and 8 cores, while we see processors with 12, 16, and even 24 cores in Intel’s case. Therefore, a CPU like the Ryzen 7800X3D with 8 cores has excellent performance, and for now, appears to be the sweet spot for spending money on a gaming processor. With Intel, as we climb up the CPU tiers, we notice a performance improvement not only due to added cores but also increased clock frequencies.
The i9-14900KS will be the blue team’s next release. As Moore’s Law is Dead explains, it didn’t make much sense to put it on sale, considering the i9-14900K already comes with very high frequencies. Not to mention the power consumption, which could triple that of a Ryzen 7800X3D, for example. However, this has been overlooked as the i9-14900KS’s launch was confirmed for a couple of months from now (depending on the availability of high-quality CPUs). This implies a slight delay from the previously rumored mid-March 2024 launch.
Intel to offer official delid support for its i9-14900KS
As you can imagine, the i9-14900KS are simply i9-14900Ks that achieve even higher frequencies. This means they need “golden sample” or premium processors that perform above average and meet the requirements to be i9-14900KS. Besides this, Intel is interested in releasing this processor because, according to leaks, the company is considering officially supporting the delidding process while under warranty.
This is quite surprising, considering Intel doesn’t even support automatic RAM overclocking via XMP on motherboards. The i9-14900KS is expected to reach a Boost frequency of 6.2 GHz, and if Intel ultimately supports the delid process, it will be great news for overclockers looking to push their CPUs even further. Remember, delidding involves removing the IHS (the metal plate on top of the CPU), exposing the processor and allowing direct cooling, thus lowering temperatures.
