Yuzu murió, y Suyu nació: así es el nuevo emulador de Switch que Nintendo no podrá parar

On PCs, we can play thousands of natively compatible games and the vast majority of games that have ever existed, thanks to emulation. Emulating the Switch is quite simple with the power of current PCs, although Nintendo managed to shut down the most popular emulator, Yuzu, after winning a lawsuit. However, it didn’t entirely die as several emulators with different names but the same functionality emerged. Suyu is one of them, and its developers have a plan to avoid being sued by Nintendo and prove that emulation is legal.

Currently, we can emulate almost all consoles, except for a few cases such as the PS4 and PS5. Thus, apart from a handful of exclusive games, we can play most others without too much trouble. We still can’t play titles like Bloodborne and are waiting without much hope that it will ever come to PC. However, we don’t need to be so obsessive about a single game, as we have the opportunity to play many more games from any console.

The Suyu Switch emulator aims to avoid making the same mistakes as Yuzu to prevent Nintendo from targeting it. The goal of emulation is to preserve video games over time since consoles eventually stop being sold, and there is no way to play those games. While this goal is achieved, most people end up preserving games through piracy. This includes downloading ROMs and ISOs for free without actually owning the game. Although we have seen it with other consoles and PCs, piracy is widespread in the emulation world when it comes to extracting console keys and firmware needed for emulation.

Yuzu was sued by Nintendo, and it is believed that its defeat was due to factors such as teaching users how to download and install keys and even emulating games that hadn’t been released yet (The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom). Although Yuzu’s demise was a massive blow to the emulation world, it is still alive through other projects, such as the Suyu emulator. Suyu is named after the combination “sue-you” as a direct message to Nintendo. Despite its rebellious nature, Suyu’s developers have a plan to prevent falling victim to the Japanese company. The first step is not to make money from this emulator, which Yuzu did and reportedly generated over $30,000 per month.

Suyu cannot be downloaded directly but can be built using the source files. The second step in this plan to avoid Nintendo lawsuits is not providing tutorials and step-by-step guides for Suyu. Instead, it only offers the emulator files, and the user is responsible for figuring out the rest. Yuzu provided tutorials on downloads and emulator features, including key installation and game setup, which ultimately promoted piracy. It annoyed Nintendo that videos were posted showing games running better (and sometimes earlier) on PCs than on the Nintendo Switch.

Suyu does not tolerate piracy, so it does not want to publish links to games, system files, encryption keys, or even shader caches, which are necessary to avoid stuttering. The developers warn that if you plan to emulate with Suyu, you must have your keys, as although this emulator is based on Yuzu’s source code, it will work differently. One of the modifications is changing the emulator mechanism that generated “title.keys.” Suyu is serious about keeping this project alive as long as possible without being destroyed by Nintendo. If we want to use the Suyu emulator, we cannot download it directly for Windows or Linux yet. The only option is to build it from the source code on GitLab, where we can find the necessary instructions.
