Good news for users with modest graphics cards, as a modder named “Nukem9” has created a mod that allows the replacement of NVIDIA DLSS 3 technology with AMD FSR 3 with Frame Generation. Essentially, any user can benefit from a significant performance improvement with this mod.
What’s most interesting is that AMD FSR 3 technology is compatible with any GPU. This means that even NVIDIA users can take advantage of this technology. It’s worth noting that NVIDIA DLSS 3 is only compatible with GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards. This implies that NVIDIA users with older GPUs can use AMD FSR 3 to take advantage of Frame Generation and increase the frame rate. This is ideal for users with an older GPU struggling to run modern titles.
How it feels to add AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation to an NVIDIA DLSS 3 game
What you just saw is an example of running Cyberpunk 2077 with AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation technology. The most interesting thing is that it’s running on a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 at a resolution of 1440p. Alongside an Intel Core i7-12700K, 32GB of RAM, and GPU overclocking (+75 MHz on the chip and +500 MHz on memory), the benchmark is completed with a performance of 20.75 FPS. This performance level was achieved by running the game in High quality with Ray Tracing.
By activating NVIDIA’s DLSS technology in Quality mode, the average performance reached 40 FPS, making it playable. Summing up the video, the most interesting part is running the game with AMD FSR 3 in Quality mode alongside Frame Generation. It appears that the benchmark has issues measuring FPS after installing the mod, displaying 35.55 FPS. However, using an external performance measurement tool, the average performance reaches 71.6 FPS. This means the game is now perfectly playable and smooth, with nearly triple the original performance without any upscaling technology.
Mods always saving the gaming community
While we have AMD FSR 3, Intel XeSS, and NVIDIA DLSS 3 technologies, the problem lies in implementation. It’s rare to find games that include all three technologies. The latest example was with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which notably had a technological partnership with Intel. Despite this, AMD and NVIDIA technologies were also present.
On the other hand, Starfield had a technological partnership with AMD. This led to the game only featuring AMD FSR upscaling technology. Although it’s an open technology usable by other GPU manufacturers, performance will always be better when employing their own technology. That’s why, from the same day of Starfield’s release, several mods arrived to replace AMD FSR with NVIDIA DLSS.
Unfortunately, even though all companies have plugins for game developers to easily implement their technologies, it will continue to be uncommon to find games that adapt to any GPU. Hence, the final help always comes in the form of community-created mods.
