Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, continues to improve its prices, this time thanks to a new Basic Plan. Similar to traditional internet service providers and their cable internet offers, Starlink has launched a new, slower, but more affordable internet connection.
Previously, Starlink provided only one type of internet connection, now known as the Standard Plan. For 40 euros per month, the company offered download speeds between 190 and 290 Mbps. Now, the Basic Plan offers half the speed at a rather attractive entry price. This is relevant for those with tight budgets.
Starlink’s Basic Plan offers download speeds of up to 100 Mbps for 29 euros per month
Indeed, the Basic Plan promises download speeds ranging from 50 to 100 Mbps in the best-case scenario. Upload speeds will range between 16 and 33 Mbps. However, the strong point of network connectivity, latency, remains consistent, moving between 23 and 35 ms.
Thus, only the download and upload speeds are reduced, which is still more than sufficient for streaming 4K resolution content. It is also ideal for accessing game streaming platforms or playing any multiplayer game in a completely smooth and competitive manner.
This is truly an interesting option for any user. In the worst-case scenario, a gamer might experience longer game download times. However, this is insignificant compared to the 11 euro per month savings from the original service. The fine print states that in addition to the base 29 euros, there is a 9 euro per month fee imposed by the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) for the license cost of accessing necessary electromagnetic spectrum.
Therefore, the Standard Plan’s cost comes to 49 euros per month, 11 euros less than the 38 euros per month fee for the Basic Plan (both prices include regulatory fees).
The new plan is compatible with the option to rent the antenna
Indeed, one of Starlink’s latest moves was to offer the antenna rental option. Thus, for a total cost of 48 euros per month, you can access the 100 Mbps Basic Plan, which includes internet connection fees, regulatory fees, and antenna payment. Additionally, you can purchase the antenna at half price, which amounts to 225 euros for permanent ownership.
For 48 euros per month (or 38 euros + 225 euros for antenna ownership), the price becomes more manageable for those with limited connectivity options. In fact, the service is so widespread that cruise ships have begun using Starlink’s maritime system, which delivers high-speed internet at sea. However, resale prices for the service might be considered excessive.
The first cruise ships offering this connectivity charge users 30 euros for 24 hours of usage.
