It was during the height of the pandemic, in November 2020, when Sony and Microsoft released their gaming consoles. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S saw significant initial demand, but it was Sony that quickly ran out of stock, causing prices to increase. The shortage problem wasn’t resolved until much later, allowing customers to purchase a PS5 at the original price once again. Since then, sales of the console have greatly increased, and there’s even a “Slim” version that’s smaller and lighter. Now, Sony has unveiled the three new colors for the PS5 Slim, which will debut in 2024 and match the DualSense controllers.
More than three years have passed since the original PS5 launch, and many expected Sony to announce a Pro version. This speculation was due to the fact that the PS4 Pro was released three years after the original PS4, but this pattern wasn’t repeated with the current generation. Instead, a PS5 Slim was introduced, essentially offering a smaller and lighter version of the console that’s approximately 30% smaller in size when compared to the original.
At CES 2024, Sony revealed the PS5 Slim’s new Cobalt Blue, Sterling Silver, and Volcanic Red colors
While the PlayStation 5 Slim doesn’t have many differences from the original, other than its reduced size and weight, the separated disc drive in the digital version is worth noting. The standard version will still have the disc drive attached, making it the most optimal model for those seeking to play physical games. When the Slim was officially announced a few months ago, it was revealed that the SSD capacity was 1 TB instead of 825 GB, and the custom AMD SoC was slightly more efficient. Otherwise, the design and color remained the same as the original.
This similarity is no longer the case, as Sony unveiled three new colors for the PS5 Slim at CES 2024. As seen in the accompanying image, the standard console with a disc drive is shown in each color, which will also be available for the digital version. From left to right, the new colors are Cobalt Blue, Sterling Silver, and Volcanic Red, akin to the hues seen on DualSense controllers.
Sony will sell the console shells in these colors for $54.99/€54.99
Rather than completely new PS5 Slim consoles, these colors will be offered as separate shells. Sony plans to sell the colored shells for $54.99/€54.99, catering to customers who aren’t satisfied with the original white console. Users can choose from blue, silver, or red to better match their entertainment setup.
The PS5 has met Sony’s expectations, and when the company announced there would be no more stock shortages, sales increased even further. The highest sales growth occurred in late 2022 and throughout 2023, with over 50 million PS5 units sold in total.
