AMD Ryzen 7 8840U, «el deseado»: demanda muy alta, sobre todo para consolas portátiles, ¿más rápido que el Core Ultra 7 155H?

The arrival of a new generation of processors is always a significant event for the entire industry and consumers. This holds true until performance tests and benchmarks are revealed; if they do not perform well, interest will fade. However, this does not seem to be the case for AMD’s Hawk Point CPUs. At CES 2024, Hawk Point (Ryzen 8000 for laptops and 8000G for desktops) already has many interested customers, and now performance tests of the Ryzen 7 8840U vs Intel Core Ultra 7 155H have been leaked.

AMD’s APUs have managed to outshine Intel by offering processors with good performance and integrated graphics that surpassed their rival’s best. This was the case until Meteor Lake arrived on laptops, changing the situation. With Meteor, we see a significantly faster tGPU, doubling the performance compared to the previous generation of processors. While AMD performed similarly in energy efficiency and consumption, their products still outperformed Intel’s.

Ryzen 7 8840U vs Intel Core Ultra 7 155H: AMD wins in all tests

Devices such as handheld consoles with PC hardware require an efficient CPU + GPU combination, as the goal is not only performance but also battery life. This is where AMD’s APUs come into play, and the latest to arrive are the Hawk Point APUs, which incorporate Ryzen 8000 (Zen 4) processors. We have already seen the engineering sample performance of the Ryzen 9 8940 HS in Geekbench, where it was slightly faster in single-core and 12% faster in multi-core compared to the Ryzen 9 7940HS.

At CES 2024, which took place a week ago, AMD announced its Hawk Point APUs had a high demand and many interested customers, especially in the handheld console market. They also showcased a comparison of the Ryzen 7 8840U’s performance against Meteor Lake, demonstrating Hawk Point’s capabilities. The 8840U is found to be between 6% faster (Stable Diffusion) and 85% faster (DaVinci Resolve) in AI tests when compared to the Core Ultra 7 155H.

According to AMD, the 8840U offers up to +85% in AI, +60% in 1080p gaming, +52% in benchmarks, and +81% efficiency

Considering this is a low-power “U” APU against a Meteor Lake “H,” AMD’s results are impressive. Moreover, AMD prevails in the GPU performance comparison between the 8840U and 155H. In games like League of Legends, both offer similar performance, with the 8840U and its iGPU 780M being only 2% faster. On the other hand, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Borderlands 3, it achieves about 30% more FPS. With World of Tanks Encore, it gains a 51% advantage, and in Far Cry 6, it is 60% faster.

In benchmarks, AMD does not disappoint, with Hawk Point being between 14% and 52% faster than Meteor Lake. Finally, AMD achieves a substantial edge over Intel, making it much more attractive for handheld consoles. According to the company, the Ryzen 7 8840U provides 81% more performance per watt in the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark compared to the Core Ultra 7 155H. However, Intel is likely to consume less power at idle, but this is less relevant in devices that will actively run programs and games instead of sitting idle on the desktop.

In summary, AMD’s Ryzen 7 8840U is highly sought after, with a strong demand especially for handheld consoles and outperforming the Core Ultra 7 155H.
